Lee Yung-Chih used to work as an environmental inspector. During his inspections of recycling rooms of various community buildings, he was inspired by the surroundings, feeling as though he were in different art museums. He draws inspiration from the photographs of security offices and the recycled objects in recycling rooms of these communities to re-examine how he views society and the world. The process transforms his experiences into his creative materials.
Using his artistic expertise, Lee reflects on how these functional supports used for recycling can be restored to a state of simplicity, resembling plain matter. Meanwhile, he aims to highlight the absurd and fictional historical situations when responding to how the temporality of the garbage can be represented. Consequently, the artist creates a captivating but everyday spectacle in the gallery room. The multicolored projection installation comprises disposable recycled objects commonly found in everyday life. By creating ambiguous projections onto the garbage bags, Lee’s goal is to emphasize the fact that illusory appearances are merely changes in perception. In reality, the objects themselves have always remained unchanged.
Special thanks to the security guards, general manager, cleaning staff, and other community property personnel I encountered during the inspection process. I’m also grateful for the casual conversations, whether about environmental topics or completely unrelated—just small talk, banter, and even the occasional corny joke.
